Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for approximately $13 billion, marking one of the largest acquisitions in the company’s history and underscoring its ambition to expand beyond hardware into the broader artificial intelligence ecosystem. Hugging Face, founded in 2016, has become one of the world’s leading platforms for sharing, developing, and deploying open-source AI models.
The deal reflects Nvidia’s growing commitment to the open AI movement. While companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic largely rely on proprietary systems, Hugging Face has built its reputation around making AI models, datasets, and tools widely accessible to developers, researchers, and businesses. The platform hosts millions of AI models and hundreds of thousands of datasets, serving a global community of more than 18 million developers.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said Hugging Face will continue operating as an open platform. The acquisition is expected to strengthen collaboration across the AI industry while providing Hugging Face with additional computing resources, infrastructure, and global reach. CEO Clément Delangue noted that joining Nvidia would help the company scale its services and accelerate innovation.
Analysts view the purchase as both a strategic and defensive move. By integrating Hugging Face into its ecosystem, Nvidia can encourage developers to continue building AI applications that run on Nvidia-powered infrastructure. This is especially important as major technology companies increasingly invest in their own AI chips to reduce dependence on Nvidia hardware.
The acquisition also signals Nvidia’s intention to play a larger role in every layer of the AI industry—from chips and cloud infrastructure to software, models, and developer tools. Investors welcomed the announcement, seeing it as another step in Nvidia’s effort to cement its leadership in the rapidly expanding AI market.
