The climate phenomenon develops when unusually warm surface waters spread across the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, influencing atmospheric circulation far beyond the region.
A powerful El Niño can produce contrasting effects across different parts of the world. Some areas may experience intense heat and prolonged drought, while others face heavier rainfall, flooding and storms. These conditions can threaten agriculture, reduce water availability, increase wildfire risks and damage infrastructure.
